First Stone

(Primeira Pedra)

Primeira Pedra (First Stone) is a cement sculpture,7 × 7 × 7 cm, signed and dated. It is produced as an open edition. Viewers arrive at the exhibition and find the sculptures displayed on top of pages from yesterday’s newspaper. On a cardboard sign the following instruction are written: THE FIRST STONE FOUND IN THE STREETS THAT FILLS YOUR HAND CAN BE EXCHANGED FOR ONE OF THESE SCULPTURES. ASK FOR THE GALLERY STAFF TO EFFECT THE TRANSACTION.

The sculptures are made available according to demand. In the course of the exhibition the multiple small sculptures are be converted into a single collection of stones.

First Stone was acquired by Pinacoteca de São Paulo and displayed there in 2019.

In 2025, First Stone was installed at Neue Nationalgalerie, in Berlin, during Lygia Clark’s Retrospektive, as a parte of the event Propositions, which dealt with Clark’s legacy in contemporary art.
